IS PET
OWNERSHIP PART OF YOUR LIFE? CONSIDER THE BENEFITS
Do you have a pet? Many people—especially
seniors—might think that their situation makes
pet ownership impossible. For example, a physical
disability or other health problems might seem like
reasons that would close out the possibility of enjoying
the company of a loving animal. But depending on
your own personal situation, having a pet could actually
help you feel better.
I’ve found that pet ownership
can actually bring many benefits. Did you know pet
owners have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol
levels, fewer headaches, less indigestion and less
difficulty sleeping? Walking a dog can give you needed
exercise and caring for pets in general can give
structure to your day. Having a pet can even help
you from feeling depressed or lonely. Sometimes pets
can seem more understanding than people because pets
just sit there and listen.
If you have a pet already,
there are a number of ways to ease the burden of
ownership. You can check the Internet or Yellow Pages
for trainers, groomers and veterinarians who make
house calls or find the services of pet sitters or
pet walkers. You can check catalog and on-line companies
who deliver pet supplies—including food and
medication—right to your door. You could also
consider asking a family member to help you take
care of your pet.
If you’re thinking of adding
a pet to your family circle, you can check with animal
shelters that have adult animals that are calmer
and already trained to live in a home. These dogs
and cats that need homes are ideally suited to older
people who don’t have the stamina to live with
a young energetic animal.
Here at The Summit we recognize
the benefits that pets bring to our lives and certain
pets are allowed. The Summit also has regular pet
shows and a “Friendly Paws” program where
other people bring their pets to visit on a regular
basis. It’s kind of like having grandchildren—all
of the fun—none of the responsibility. |
